About the Exhibition

Casting directors, in collaboration with directors and producers, facilitate the selection of actors for roles in a movie. Utilizing photographs, interviews, and auditions, and often working closely with talent agencies and managers, casting directors use their creative instincts and a deep understanding of a character to recommend actors for a part. Performance explores the relationship between casting and acting and the evolution of a performance from script to screen. During the heyday of the studio system, from the 1920s to the 1960s, casting directors served more as organizers, largely responsible for casting minor roles. The studios operated like factories in which actors, who were often under contract, would play similar characters in movie after movie. Starting in the 1960s, casting directors became a more essential part of the creative development process as Marion Dougherty and Lynn Stalmaster helped to elevate the role of the profession. Once cast, actors bring their characters to life on screen. To prepare, an actor might conduct research, make script notes, undertake physical or vocal training, or immerse themselves in the role off set. All of this is done in service of creating a believable and impactful character. Performance offers a look at some of these processes through screen tests and audition videos featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tyrese Gibson, Taraji P. Henson, Silas Howard, Jon Voight, and others. Polaroids and casting cards from Dougherty are on view, as well as an annotated script from Laura Dern.
