Visitors to the Stories of Cinema: Sound exhibition enjoy a 20-minute feature on the art and science of film sound.
About the gallery
It’s hard to overstate the emotional impact that sound can bring to a film. From narration and dialogue to sound effects and music, movie sounds are woven into every stage of production. Composers, sound designers, editors, and mixers record, layer, and create sounds that—when combined with imagery—immerse audiences in imaginary worlds.
The 20-minute piece in this gallery, directed by sound editor Midge Costin, features outtakes from her documentary Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound (2019) and a behind-the-scenes look at the Oscar®-winning sounds of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). The adventure film was nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and Sound Mixing (Paul Massey, D.M. Hemphill, Arthur Rochester), and won for Sound Editing (Richard King).
